CLOVIS POINT WITH CAL HOWARD CERTIFICATE
This 3 ¾” Paleo-Indian Clovis point (CAH101), dating c.14,000 – 9000BP and made from a tan stone laced with ferrous oxide veils identified as Payson chert (a type found near the town of Payson in western Illinois), was authenticated by the well-known Calvin Howard in January of 2007. Subsequently, the artifact was formally rejected by two authenticators (and much later by a third). Because Howard was convinced of the authenticity of the Clovis, he purchased it himself from the owner. He then conducted a variety of tests to determine the natural attributes of the artifact’s patina and other surface modifications. Additionally, examples of Payson chert were obtained and the attributes of both ancient and freshly flaked surfaces were compared with those of the artifact both microscopically and with long and shortwave UV light. These examinations supported Howard’s conclusion of authenticity ….and that opinion has never changed. During a recent visit, and upon my request after hearing about this Clovis, Howard walked me through the processes he used which gave me the opportunity to complete my own detailed comparisons of the Payson chert samples and the artifact features. A geologist by profession with a background in lithic examination, I herein support Howard’s conclusion without reservation. However, any potential buyer must be willing to accept Cal’s authentication as there is a possibility that the point sent to any other might be rejected (if you know Cal and have dealt with him in the past, you’ll feel the same about his ability as I do). Upon request, I will be glad to send you a listing of authenticators who have looked at and rejected this point. The purchaser will receive this point in a 5” x 8” glass-covered collector frame, a map of Illinois high-lighting the town of Payson, and Cal Howard’s certificate. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing time, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced and available! Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph. And if you want to further refine the group, add one or two additional modifiers at the same time such as ‘Indian, Precolumbian, Stone, Pot, Gold, etc.’ Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
