TWELVE STONE PENATES FROM THE HOWARD COLLECTION
The twelve smaller stone penates in this group (THE.F51.5, 21, 24, 26, 30-32, 35. 38, 44, 47 and 48) were collected by the late Chester Howard in the area of Mitla in the mid-20th century. All are assigned to the Mixtec group and dated c.1100-1500AD and were hand carved from a relatively soft stone believed to be anhydrite. The suspension hole on each of the penates has worn through. Ranging in condition from fairly good to excellent, they all could easily be adapted for contemporary wear. Note the centimeter scale on the left side of each photo that will helps in making an estimate of size (1” = 2.54 cm). The item inventory number appears on each photo in brackets, followed by a brief description and grade value, the type of stone and condition, and then a comment about the suspension bale formed between the two angled, bow-drilled holes. A brief description of condition appears at the bottom of the text, and finally the price. Select or ask any question by referring first to the Trocadero Item Number on this page, and then to our Inventory Number shown on the given photograph. Each item purchased from this page comes with a small display card, a biographical write-up about Chester Howard, a map of Mexico high-lighting the site of Mitla, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. NOTE: if you’d like to see all of the various other items listed in our popular group of twelve format (a great way to save on browsing time), enter the single word TWELVE into the search link. If interested only in a particular type, add a descriptive word to your search such as jewelry, pot, textile, gold, coin, etc.
