| The twelve amuletic penate stone pendants (TEH166 A-C, E-K, M and O) in this group were all collected at the Mixtec site of Mitla in the mid-20th century by the late Dr. Allen Heflin. Dating c.1100-1500AD, and hand-fashioned from green and gray anhydrite and serpentine, every one was hand-carved in the anthropomorphic style. Worn as protective pieces in Pre-Columbian days, most were drilled for suspension and can be worn today. Each photo shows two to three views an individually priced penate along with a centimeter scale to estimate size (2.54 cm = 1 inch). Conditions range from fairly good to excellent. The item inventory number appears on each photo in brackets, followed by a grade value, the type of stone and condition, and then a comment about the suspension bale formed between the two angled, bow-drilled holes (most on the back, a few at the back and top of the head). A brief description of condition appears at the bottom of the text, and finally the price. Select or ask any question by referring first to the Trocadero Item Number on this page, and then to our Inventory Number shown on the given photograph. Each penate purchased from this page comes with a small display card, a biographical write-up about Chester Howard, a map of Mexico high-lighting the site of Mitla, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
