PRECOLUMBIAN GOLD & QUARTZ BEAD NECKLACE
The gold tube beads and quartz crystal beads in this 22” necklace (97.190HD) are all attributed to the Calima horizon in the El Bolo River of Colombia and date c.100BC-400AD. Possibly originally found together as a group, but no way of being positive. The gold beads, made from hammered, fairly heavy sheet gold and ‘capped’ at the ends by folding, are all in very good to excellent condition and measure up to 5/8” in length. Small contemporary metal beads were used inside the hollow gold tube beads to hold them in line on the contemporary twisted steel stringing wire (otherwise they would sit in a very irregular and unattractive fashion). The quartz crystal beads (up to 1” in length) are in fairly good to excellent condition with some showing the typical fractures and cracks of quartz. If worn, this necklace should be handled with care (buyer’s risk) as hard impact of the quartz beads could cause breakage. The necklace, with a gold-filled contemporary clasp, would make a good display piece or could be taken apart to use the individual elements in designing other pieces of jewelry. It comes with a small display card, a map of Colombia outlining the Calima area, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
