ANCIENT ROMAN GLASS FLASK, CYPRUS

This 4 ¾” tall, very pale green, eight-sided, mold-blown (or possibly paddled), ancient glass bottle (RG25) has a funnel-shaped neck with an encircling and upward spiraling trail of glass. Intact and in excellent condition, the surface is coated with a patchy residue of mud and has a scattered opalescence from the decomposing glass. Dating into the Roman period, c.100-300AD, the bottle was purchased in Cyprus in the earlier 20th century by the by the then US Ambassador to France, Walter Evans Edge, and sold from his estate by Edge’s son to the last owner in the 1960s. It comes with a small display card and a certificate that both guarantees authenticity and incorporates a brief biography about Edge.
