| Dating into the 1st century AD, this hollow gold ring (100.178BHD) was found in northern Afghanistan. The intaglio, depicting a Roman youth, is made up of a black and white opaque glass ‘sandwich’. The intaglio is ˝” long, and the ring a diminutive size 1. Not a wearable piece, the ring is in overall fairly good relic condition with a little splitting and bending around the bezel area. The shank and the underside of the crown of the hollow ring are both in much better condition than the bezel. The glass intaglio shows the effects of burial in the ground through its pitted surface, but the image produced when impressed in clay is quite distinct. The gold, while untested, is undoubtedly of high karat (18-20K?). A superb piece for the collector of ancient jewelry or glass items, it comes with a small display card and a map of Afghanistan highlighting the area in which the ring was found. | ||||||||
