LAMBAYEQUE-CHIMU BURNISHED BLACKWARE BOTTLE
From the Lorenzo Gordon Fritz collection, this fine burnished black-ware libation bottle (LFG437) is attributed to the Lambayeque-Chimu cultural area of north coastal Peru, c.700-1300AD. At the base of the neck is the modeled image of the slant-eyed and tattooed Naymlap, legendary Lambayeque hero king wearing three necklaces, and from whose shoulders erupt a pair of celestial serpents below each of which are prone adoration figures. On the handle of the vessel is a pair of birds, one of which appears to be feeding the other. In overall very good condition with a single cross-shaped stress crack on its body (stabilized with an application of Elmer’s glue), chips along one side of its footed base, and a tiny interior lip chip, this bottle with superb imagery comes with a small display card, a map of Peru highlighting the area from which it came, a biographical sketch about Lorenzo Fritz, a more detailed write-up about this extraordinary piece done by Fritz, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Select or ask any question by referring either to the Trocadero Item Number at the top of this page, or to the Inventory Number shown at the beginning of this paragraph. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced! And if you want to further refine the group, add one or two additional modifiers at the same time such as ‘Indian, Precolumbian, Stone, Pot, Gold, etc.’ Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
