TIAHUANACAN BASKET FROM BOLIVIAN HIGHLANDS
Decorated with dark brown, almost black wraps of grass spaced geometrically along its rim and in its body, this old highlands basket (LFG458) is attributed to the Tiahuanacan cultural period of Bolivia, c.400-1200AD. In overall good condition, though darkened and slightly out-of-round due to desiccation and age, a few areas along the rim of the 7” long basket have lost the grass loops exposing the bundled fiber coil. In addition to a few small areas along the sides of the basket where similar loss has occurred, there is a two-inch long shallow gouge on the bottom of the basket that does not penetrate its interior. Curiously, a tiny, earth-toned Tiahuanacan textile fragment still adheres to the surface of the gouged area. From the Lorenzo Gordon Fritz collection, the basket comes with a small display card, a map of Bolivia highlighting the Tiahuanacan area, a biographical sketch about the collector, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Select or ask any question by referring either to the Trocadero Item Number at the top of this page, or to Inventory Number shown at the beginning of this paragraph. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced! And if you want to further refine the group, add one or two additional modifiers at the same time such as ‘Indian, Precolumbian, Stone, Pot, Gold, etc.’ Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
