68” HAMMERED SHEET GOLD BAND, MOCHE, PERU
This flexible gold band, a 68” long by 1” wide slightly tapered strip (MAP115), is believed to have been used for either head deformation or body decoration during the Moche period of Peru, c.400-800AD. A similar but shorter hammered gold strip is illustrated in Plate LIX of Gallo’s “GOLD OF PERU.” In overall fair condition, the strip has suffered creasing and occasional splits, but still remains together. Undecorated and with a small perforation at its tapered and rounded end (the other end is flat and may be missing a bit of its original length), if utilized for deformation the band would have been bound around the head of an infant during early growth. If used for decoration, it was simply wrapped around the head, arm, leg, or other part of the body. The rolled band comes with a small display card, a map of Peru highlighting the Moche area, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Select or ask any question by referring first to the Trocadero Item Number at the top of this page, and then to the Number shown at the beginning of this paragraph. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced! And if you want to further refine the group, add one or two additional modifiers at the same time such as ‘Indian, Precolumbian, Stone, Pot, Gold, Jewelry, etc.’ Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
