Great Aztec Pipe, Symbolic Bowl: Ex Heflin
Here’s another extraordinary Aztec pipe (AXH92) from the estate of the late Dr. Allen Heflin. Collected at the site of Cuautitlan, Mexico in 1961 (and characteristically marked by Heflin with that information in black ink on the base of its highly burnished redware stem), the bichrome pipe has been glued in two places and shows signs of ancient tip wear from the tightly clenched teeth of the Aztec warrior who smoked it. The strikingly decorated bowl of the pipe is adorned with a multi-feathered headdress design at the base of which is a repeated vertical symbol of what appears to be the warrior’s atlatl. Small areas of white pigment that once covered and enhanced the features on the sides of the bowl still exist in a few of the feathered depressions. Measuring 8 ¾” in length, and still smokable, this rare relic comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about the collector and amateur archaeologist Dr. Heflin, a map of the Valley of Mexico that shows the extent of the great lakes that filled it at the time of the Spanish Conquest and additionally has the location of Cuautitlan highlighted, and finally, our certificate guaranteeing the authenticity of this desirable piece.
