MEXICAN COLONIAL PERIOD BRONZE CANON

This 12 5/8” long, 8 ½ pound cast bronze canon (TEH119) was purchased in Morelia, Mexico in 1960 by the late Chester Howard, adventurer, collector, and founder of the Colorado Mineral Society in 1936. Believed to date back into the early 19th century colonial period, the canon has no markings and except for its bent ball handle, is in excellent condition. Obviously too small to have been effective as a fearsome weapon, it was most likely used to issue a salute or a warning. The canon would make a tremendously interesting decorator mounted on a wooden carriage copied from an original of the period, or added ‘as is’ to the collection of a pirate enthusiast! The canon comes with a small display card, a map of Michoacan, Mexico on which the city of Morelia has been highlighted, and a biographical sketch of Chester Howard that summarizes his life and tells briefly of his various collections. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various other listings, and at the same time limit your browsing time, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced and available! Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
