| This rare Pre-Columbian stone rasp (MAS1) may indeed be unique! Acquired in the state of Nayarit, West Mexico, in the late 1950s, the 8 3/8” pecked and partially polished dark greenish black argillite rasp/pendant is related to the shaft tomb cultures of that area dating c.300BC-200AD. Many of the ceramic figurines found on the West Coast have been portrayed holding various types of simply designed rasps. This rasp has a three-dimensional head at the top of its grooved and pointed body with two arms bent along its side at the shoulders, hands along its breast, and two crouched legs carved in relief on the opposite sides just below the mid-point. Examined by a respected museum curator in 1998, he stated that the rasp was similar to those depicted occasionally on larger ceramic figurines from West Mexico, but he had never seen any actual rasps made of materials other than bone or wood and considered this one to be very rare. Employed as a ‘musical’ instrument by rapidly rubbing a rod of wood or bone across the 16 grooves on its front, it’s not difficult to imagine that a healer or shaman may have once used the rasp during curative ceremony. In overall very good condition even though glued together along two simple breaks, one at the neck and the other just below the figure’s feet, this museum quality artifact comes with a small display card, a map of Mexico highlighting the area in which it was found, a complete copy of the museum curator’s inspection report, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
