Erotic Moche Stirrup Vessel With Morbid Theme
Not for the sensitive, this erotic stirrup vessel (PES41) defies logical explanation. A description of what is shown is not difficult, but explaining its significance is beyond me. Rather than describe the images on the burnished 9 ¼” tall vessel, I’ll leave it to the reader to step through the photos and, if the message is clear to any reader, I’ll be grateful to add that interpretation to the write-up. Attributed to the Moche along the northern coast of Peru, whose art form is not unknown for its eroticism, the vessel dates to c.100-800AD. In overall good and very showy condition, there are some chips around the spout and base edges, and a small crack around the base of one of the stirrup legs. From the Brian Safe collection, the jar comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about the late owner, a map of Peru highlighting the Moche area, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced!
