| From the estate of Brian Safe, this 11 ¼” tall red-on-buff stirrup jar (PES40) is attributed to the Moche horizon of Peru, c.100-800AD. The geometric design around the lower half of the jar is faithfully reproduced six times, but the Moche artist had to cheat a little to fill in the small space remaining when he (or she) placed the seventh...a third-sized final rendition of the same pattern! Almost hidden on the top of the vessel, below the stirrup handle, is the painted image of a multi-legged critter with pointed tail, possibly meant to represent a member of the lizard family. Without repairs, the jar has undergone moderate paint loss, some abrasion and light chipping at the spout, moderate chipping around the base rim, and with two small holes in the body of the jar, probably due to probes. This decorative and stirking jar, from one of the great gold working cutlures of Peru, comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about the late owner, a map of Peru on which has been highlighted the Moche area, and finally, our certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
