COSTA RICAN JADE AXE GOD CELT

Measuring 5 1/8” in height, this perforated axe god celt (VPW1) is attributed to the Guanacaste-Nicoya region of Costa Rica and is dated c.300BC-500AD. Determined to be jadeite through a specific gravity test result of 3.31 and a spot refractive index of 1.66, the light green, front-polished beauty is from a private, northeastern collection. Purchased by my consigner from Howard Rose’s Arte Primitivo Gallery in New York City in June 2001, the celt is in overall very good condition with only a few minor nicks along its tapered and sharp bit edge. A fine example of the cult image said to represent the thunderbolt, the two “breasts” on the celt are thought to be trophy heads. This fine celt comes with a small display card, a map of Costa Rica highlighting the Guanacaste-Nicoya area, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced!
