BI-CHROME COLIMA DOG JAR
With this fine bi-chrome Colima dog jar (PES33), we are pleased to introduce the first of some 75 consigned items from the estate of Brian Safe, a professional engineer and graduate of the Colorado School of Mines whose diverse interests resulted in his acquiring a collection that should appeal to all levels. Measuring 11 7/8” in length, the intact, highly burnished, somewhat typically corpulent pup was purchased at an FDIC auction in Houston in 1990 during a bank liquidation sale. Associated with the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico, the dog, dating c.300BC-300AD, stands with front legs bowed, ears perked high in an attentive pose, and short tail upright towards the heavens. A good smattering of mineral bloom unobtrusively coats the surface. This handsome vessel comes with a small display card, a map of Mexico highlighting the Colima area, a biographical sketch about Brian Safe and his varied collection, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
