VERACRUZ SMILING FACE FIGURE
This 12” tall ‘smiling face’ figural whistle (TEH.F50.4) is attributed to the Veracruz horizon along the Gulf Coast area of Mexico dating into the Late Classic Period, c.550-950AD. The hollow figure, with outstretched arms and filed teeth, wears a necklace of four large disk beads with a cone-shaped center piece that may not be original to the image, or if so, was not very well centered when re-attached (it too has been glued in place). At the top edge of his headdress is the whistle hole (the whistling port from which a deep, throaty sound is emitted, can be seen as a rectangular opening at the back of his head). In spite of a light coating of mud and a few other nicks and small holes, the figure shows very well, and would even be further enhanced with a stand to support it. From the Chester Howard collection, the figure comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about the late owner who founded the Colorado Mineral Society in the earlier 20th century, a map of Mexico highlighting the Veracruz area, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. You can see many more items from this old and diverse collection by typing the three letters TEH into the search box on any of the catalog pages. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various other listings, and at the same time limit your browsing time, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced and available! Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
