REDWARE HEAD POT DEPICTING A WHISTLER
The specific provenance of this Pre-Columbian redware head pot (RFM60) is unknown, but it is thought to be from West Mexico. With mouth distinctly formed into a whistler’s pucker, and remnant bits of red paint on the pinkish clay, the bowl brings with it a whimsical mood that aptly negates the mystery of its origin. In overall good conditon, without restoration, and a great display piece, the 4 ½” tall bowl has four two-inch stress cracks coursing down from its rim (none of which significantly weaken the bowl’s structural integrity), significant pigment loss, and is lightly pitted over 50% of its surface. A guess is that the pot is related to the Shaft Tomb complex of West Mexico dating c.300BC-600AD, but no guarantees other than it is Pre-Columbian in age. From the local collection of one of the founders of the Rocky Mountain Institute of Pre-Columbian Studies, the head pot comes with a small display card, a map of Mexico highlighting the Shaft Tomb area, and our certificate guaranteeing that the piece is Pre-Columbian in age. You can view all of the pieces from this fine consigned collection (recently considered by the Peabody Museum for acquisition, and by Sotheby’s for auction) by entering the letters RFM into the search link on this or any other page of our catalog. NOTE: if you would also like to view a large number of our various other listings, and at the same time limit your browsing time, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced!
