JICARILLA APACHE STORAGE BASKET, C.1890

This well used, 17” tall, Jicarilla Apache handled storage basket (BB68) is dated c.1890. The repeated triangular geometric design, once a handsomely visible dark red produced by dyed wefts on both the inside and outside of the basket, is now seen only on its interior as a much-subdued pattern. A sturdy, rod-coiled basket with moderately heavy damage to the rim, a few spots of dried soluble glue applied sometime in the past, and a fair amount of scattered missing weft, the basket must be graded at about a 6. Even with the described damage and obvious evidence of use, the basket still displays reasonably well, and is a good example of an antique Native American used basket. From the diversified collection of the late Billy Branch of Denver, the basket comes with a small display card, a map highlighting the area of the Jicarilla Apache, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
