GUANACASTE NICOYA STONE FIGURAL PENDANT
This 6 ½” tall, geometrically styled figural pendant (RFM6) is from the Guanacaste Nicoya area of Costa Rica, dating c.200-600AD. Made from an indurated silty volcaniclastic rock, the axe-god celt form wears a tall headdress and stands with hands held together across its midsection. The surface of the celt is moderately rough from weathering and a clean break in the neck area has been amateurishly glued together with soluble cement. The medial ridge on its back resulted when the pendant was snapped off of the edge of the probable celt form from which it was almost completely separated by string sawing. The pendant is from the local collection of one of the founders of the now defunct Rocky Mountain Institute of Pre-Columbian Studies. It comes with a small display card, a map of Costa Rica highlighting the Guanacaste Nicoya area, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Don’t forget to watch for the additional pieces that will soon be listed under the prefix RFM from this interesting and newly consigned collection.
