| In spite of her missing left leg, this 7” tall, female figural whistle (RFM1) still projects the undenied beauty achieved by the ancient Ecuadorian potter that fashioned her. Attributed to the later phases of the Guangala horizon dating c.500BC-500AD, the mold-made, incised, and paint-striped hollow figure will still emit a whistling sound by covering the missing leg hole with the fleshy part of the palm and blowing through the hole in the top of her head. She stands with open hands held to her stomach below her breasts, bedecked with segmented bracelets and necklace, ear and nose ornaments, and wears a short skirt that retains distinct remnants of blue-green striping. Worthy of restoration, the pleasing whistle is from the local collection of one of the founders of the now defunct Rocky Mountain Institute of Pre-Columbian Studies. The figure comes with a small display card, a map of Ecuador highlighting the Guangala area, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Don’t forget to watch for the additional pieces that will soon be listed under the prefix RFM from this interesting and newly consigned collection.
