| The carved image of the crouched jaguar on the head that tops this bone spatula (TF98.78) most certainly identifies this as a shaman's purging stick. Inset with some remnant small chunks of greenstone (possibly malachite or turquoise, in themselves frequently associated with medicinal use), this amazing bone tool is in very good condition with little wear and only a small split on the back of the head. Measuring 8” in length, examples of this unsavory instrument, used in the curing and purification rites of shaman ritual, will be found in but a few isolated collections, and even then, never with identical character. Attributed to the Moche horizon of Peru, c.100-800AD, the spatula is presented in a deep Riker-style frame that comes with a map of Peru highlighting the Moche area, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
