Twelve Mixtec Penate Pendants: Ex Howard
Most of the twelve individually priced Pre-Columbian stone pendants shown in this group (TEH.F51.1, 6, 22, 27, 28, 34, 39, 44 & 46; and TEH166.D, L, N) are known as ‘penates’, named for the prayer-like pose. They were collected by the late Chester Howard, founder of the Colorado Mineral Society, in the Mitla area in the mid-20th century. All are attributed to the Post Classic Mixtex dating c.1100-1500AD. Condition and stone type vary, and though most of the pendants were originally drilled for suspension, subsequent weathering and condition of the stone makes it risky to suspend some of them without first adding additional support (perhaps a spot of epoxy in the hole to fix a thin gold or silver ring). The items in this group are in overall good condition grading in a range from 6 to 9. Worn as protective amulets in Pre-Columbian days, could they still wield their magical powers today? Each photo shows front and back of a different pendant with a standard ruler on the left side of the F51 series, and a centimeter scale for the TEH166 series. The inventory number appears in brackets, followed by a grade value, the type of stone, and then a comment about the bale formed by the small bridge of stone between the two angled, bow-drilled holes. Below follows a brief description of condition, and finally the price of the illustrated piece. Select or ask any question by referring first to the Trocadero Item Number on this page, and then to our Inventory Number shown on the given photograph. We’re pleased to announce that we’ll additionally be handling many more diverse items from this great collection including: Native American textiles, beadwork, pottery; Pre-Columbian pottery, artifacts, beads, figurines; some 350 Hacienda tokens; a great assortment of picturesque and decorative artifact frames that Howard had professionally constructed to house many of his treasures; and much more. Each penate purchased from this page comes with a small display card, a biographical write-up about Chester Howard, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing time, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced and available! Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
