| In spite of heavy wear on the soles of these early 20th century beaded moccasins (TEH.F8.2), the bold geometric beadwork has stood up quite well. From the collection of the late Chester Howard, the mocs were noted on the frame to which Howard had glued them as possibly Sioux. The adult moccasins measure 10” in length. Originally sinew sewn, the front half of each of the worn soles have been covered with hide that is held in place with heavy cotton thread. The moccasin leather is quite stiff and the front of the ankle flap on the right one has been trimmed at the front on both sides, presumably due to damage or wear. There are some half dozen missing bead loops, and one loop on the left moc hangs loosely (see photos). The worn soles of the moccasins each have some residual patches of the insoluble glue that Howard used to attach them to his frame. This eye-catching and decorative pair comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Howard, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be adding many more items from this great and diverse collection including: Native American textiles, beadwork, pottery; Pre-Columbian pottery, artifacts, beads, figurines; some 2700+ merchant, Indian Trading, Military, Hacienda tokens; a great assortment of picturesque and decorative artifact frames that Howard had professionally constructed to house many of his treasures; and much more.
