LARGE BEADED AND QUILLED SIOUX PIPE BAG

Although sinew sewn and quilled in the Sioux style, there is a question about whether this large and colorful bag (TEH.F1.1) was really Native American made. It appears to date into the mid-20th century, but at least one collector and dealer has expressed the opinion that it could have been made as a Boy Scout project, although another thought it was simply of late vintage. Probably no way of really knowing, but a potential buyer should consider this if looking for a bag that was unquestionably Indian made. In overall very good condition with no bead loss and only minor stain, the bag measures 24” from top to bottom (not counting fringe) and 7” across at widest part. Once glued to a decorative frame by its late owner, Chester Howard, the brain-tanned hide bag was removed from the frame with acetone leaving some lightened spots and stiff areas on one side from residual glue. There are a couple of small holes in the leather in the upper part of the bag, one repaired and the other open. The opening at the top of the bag had been glued together to keep it from draping in its frame, and some glued paper patches still adhere to the insides of the now released top (not visible when the sides are flattened against each other). In spite of the question of origin, this bag makes a dramatic and impressive display. It comes with a small display card and a biographical sketch about Howard and his large collection. We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be adding many more items from this great and diverse collection including: Native American textiles, beadwork, pottery; Pre-Columbian pottery, artifacts, beads, figurines; some 2700+ merchant, Indian Trading, Military, Hacienda tokens; a great assortment of picturesque and decorative artifact frames that Howard had professionally constructed to house many of his treasures; and much more.
