GREAT LAKES BEADED FLORAL BAG, E. 20TH CENT
This beaded black felt bag (TEH.F3.2) measures 7 ¼” in length and 5 ¼” in width. In overall good, worn condition, the interior of the bag below the drawstring is lined with canvas. Once glued to a decorative frame by the late Chester Howard, the bag was easily removed with acetone. Noted by Howard to be Chippewa in origin, the floral beadwork points to an early 20th century style incorporating a fair number of faceted metal seed beads. There is some bead loss along the trim at the top of the bag and along the rows just beneath the trim, in addition to some minor loss along the rows just above and below the drawstring that closes the bag, and along the bounding rows surrounding the floral field. The felt has lost its knap on a moderate number of high spots. In spite of the bead loss and the knap wear, the bag displays nicely and is a good old example of the type. It comes with a small display card, a biographical write-up about Howard, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity. We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be adding many more items from this great and diverse collection including: Native American textiles, beadwork, pottery; Pre-Columbian pottery, artifacts, beads, figurines; some 2700+ merchant, Indian Trading, Military, Hacienda tokens; a great assortment of picturesque and decorative artifact frames that Howard had professionally constructed to house many of his treasures; and much more.
