NORTHERN PLAINS PIPE BAG, L.19TH-E.20TH CENT

This late 19th to early 20th century Northern Plains Indian pipe bag (TEH.F2.1) is from the late Chester Howard collection and measures about 22 ½” in length as shown in the first photograph on this page. Any quillwork that may have existed at the bottom of the bag has been trimmed. The beads (mostly glass with some faceted brass) are sinew sewn and the impressive and bold beadwork patterns in the lower half of the bag are in very good condition, although with some embedded grime. The leather in the upper half of the bag is fairly brittle, and has suffered significant splitting and loss of material (particularly below the beaded edge opening of the bag). Howard had lightly glued the bag into a decorative frame with a glue that was not water soluble necessitating its removal with acetone. The bag was undamaged by the acetone, but there is a little residual glue on the side to which it was applied. The leather should hold up well if handled with reasonable care, and, if wanted, could probably be flattened and straightened with a restricted alchohol bath for better presentation. Our suggestion is to have it professionally framed with glass on both sides for decorative viewing. In spite of the damage, the bag displays very well and comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Howard, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be adding many more items from this great and diverse collection including: Native American textiles, beadwork, pottery; Pre-Columbian pottery, artifacts, beads, figurines; some 2700+ merchant, Indian Trading, Military, Hacienda tokens; a great assortment of picturesque and decorative artifact frames that Howard had professionally constructed to house many of his treasures; and much more. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing time, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced and available! Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
