ZOOMORPHIC CENSER WITH DOG HANDLE, COLIMA

Found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon, this two ‘dogs for the price of one’ terracotta censer (LLL425) is attributed to the Pre-Classic Colima horizon dating c.300BC-200AD. Broken across the front of the body and glued, there’s been a moderate amount of restoration on the censer’s left side, and three of the lower critter’s legs have been restored. Measuring just a bit less than 8” in length, this acted as an open cover that was placed over smoldering, aromatic copal during ceremony. With the little dog on top acting as a handle for the censer, this piece has a folksy, whimsical appeal. It comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Langdon, a map of Mexico with the Colima area highlighted, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
