| This impressive red-ware gourd olla (LLL470) measures 13” in diameter and is attributed to the Pre-Classic Colima horizon of West Mexico dating c.200BC-300AD. The olla’s shelf-like shoulder supports four three-dimensional, life-sized turtles. From the estate of the late Lynn Langdon, he acquired the olla in West Mexico in the mid-20th century. Because X-ray and visual examination of the olla indicates heavy surface restoration and repainting, it was decided to contract Bob Dodge of Artemis Galleries (the local representative for the Kotalla TL Laboratory in Germany) to collect samples from the olla and have Kotalla determine its age through the TL or thermoluminescence age-dating process. Kotalla’s analysis, fully supported by Dodge, came back with a date of 1800 years old, plus or minus the standard 20% error. The olla comes with a display card, a brief write-up about Langdon and his collection, a map of Mexico highlighting the Colima area, Kotalla’s complete thermoluminescence report signed by both he and Dodge, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity. | |||||||||
