VINEGAR BITTERS 1872 ALMANAC

‘Dr. Walker’s California Vinegar Bitters, Free From Alcohol’ (yech!)…one cannot imagine that this was a particularly popular drink in its day! J. Walker was the proprietor for this concoction, and his ‘patent medicine’ was sold through R. H. McDonald & Co., Druggists & General Agents with locations in San Francisco and New York. The cord-bound, 38-page, 5 ½” x 8” pamphlet (3.00HJ) was a bible for the Temperance Cause. With multiple tales about the horrors of drink, and numerous testimonials to the efficacy of this miracle cure for almost any imaginable disorder or disease, it’s small wonder that it had a good run in its day (and the booklet would be sent for free upon the receipt of a 3-cent stamp). Within are the detailed cures for Ague, Asthma, Biliousness, Blood (?), Boils, Bronchitis, Catarrh, Consumption, Croup, Diabetes, Diarrhea, Dropsy, Dysentery, Dyspepsia, Erysipelas, Female Diseases, Fever, Headache, Jaundice, Kidney Diseases, Liver Complaints, Painters’ Colic, Paralysis, Pneumonia, Quinsy, Rheumatism, Scrofula (of all the listed diseases, just the name of this one…SCROFULA…would put me in mortal fear), Skin Diseases, and Worm Diseases (and that doesn’t even cover those others hidden within the listed general categories). In overall fairly good condition with some edge wear, stain, and foxing (none of which affects the readability of this little gem), this treasure would fit nicely into a variety of collections, or certainly open the door for scrofulous conversation in any environment!
