FRANCIS PARKMAN AUTOGRAPH, HISTORICAL AUTHOR

This dictated letter (89.541HD), signed by Francis Parkman, is dated simply December 5th with an address noted as Jamaica Plain, Mass. The letter reads, “Dear Sir, I do not remember any trustworthy description of Fort Edward. Changes were made in it from time to time. The best printed plan that I know of in Mantes’ History of the Late (Old French) War (?), which may be found in most of our best public libraries. It represents the fort as it was in the latter part of that war. Yours very truly, F. Parkman”. A professor of horticulture at Harvard, he was famous for his works on English and French exploration in North America, but best known for THE OREGON TRAIL, a book based on his travels in the American West in 1845. In excellent condition, the folded 6 ¾” x 8 ¾” grayish paper sheet, watermarked HURD’S HAND MADE, is again creased for placing in an envelope, and has apparent very faint signs of paste from attachment in an album. From the late 18th-early 19th century Henry Howland collection of Buffalo, NY, the letter comes in an acid free sleeve along with a listing of the autographs and paper still available from the Howland collection.
