| This stone animal head (LLL785), apparently fashioned to represent a tapir, was once at the back or poll end of a fine effigy axe. Broken across the shallow hafting groove that encircled the axe, the head has no other significant damage and by itself is a good example of the skilled Pre-Columbian stone-worker’s art. Measuring 2 ¾” in length, and 1 5/8” in height at the head, the axe is attributed to the Colima horizon of west Mexico dating c.300BC-200AD. Made from grayish green volcanic rock, the tapir head comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Langdon, a map of west Mexico on which the Colima area is highlighted, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity. | ||||||||
