PRE-COLUMBIAN FIGURAL PESTLE FROM WEST MEXICO
Measuring 4 5/8” in height, this stone pestle (LLL1019), made from vesicular basalt, was found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon. In overall very good condition without chips or dings, the top of the pestle depicts a human head…any previous sharply defined images long since subdued from moderate weathering. The bottom of the pestle has been smoothed from use. From the shaft tomb area, the pestle dates c.300BC-200AD and is believed to be from the Nayarit horizon. It comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Langdon, a map of Mexico with the area in which the pestle was found highlighted, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
