RED-ON-RED STANDING COLIMA DOG VESSEL

From the collection of the late Lynn Langdon, and acquired in the mid-20th century, this 11 ˝” long, two-colored, Pre-Classic standing dog vessel (LLL463) is attributed to the Colima horizon of West Mexico dating c.200BC-300AD. In overall very good condition and coated with patchy remnants of caliche and mud, x-ray indicates minor restoration and some gluing of pieces on the back along with some stabilized stress cracking. The dog’s bulging sides, its tail, and the head are colored a slightly deeper red. The incised mouth is slightly curved in a toothy ‘smile’. Standing at alert on all fours, it stares forward towards an uncertain future. This fine example of the style comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Langdon and his collection, a map of west Mexico highlighting the area from which the dog jar came, the x-ray film for this dog, and a certificate fully guaranteeing its authenticity.
