SEATED FEMALE FIGURAL JAR, JALISCO, W. MEXICO
This 9 ¼” tall Pre-Columbian figural jar (LLL707) was found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century. From the estate of the late Lynn Langdon, the jar is intact with minor dings, though still coated with a fair amount of mud. An x-ray confirms the surface indications. The naked lady wears a beaded necklace, ear spools, a nose ornament, and has a group of nubbins on her left front arm probably representing decorative tattooing. A few of the necklace beads are missing, one of her brows is dinged, and part of the nose ornament is gone. Some of the surface slip has eroded off. Her right arm is bent holding her hand to her head just below the right ear spool, for some unknown reason. The piece can be cleaned if desired, but Langdon left the mud on it as he felt that it added to its charm. The jar comes with a small display card, a brief biographical sketch about Langdon, a map of Mexico with the Jalisco area highlighted, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
