| This early 19th century, dated, hand painted, colorful Indian lithograph (DDG49) is mounted in an attractive, mid 20th century decorated wood frame measuring 21” x 27”. From McKenney and Hall’s book INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA, the image portrays ‘Peah-Mas-Ka’, a Misquawkee Chief. From an original painting by Charles Bird King, and made into an approximately 12” x 18” lithograph by Lehman and Duval, E. C. Biddle published the litho in 1837. Although somewhat darkened with age and from not being mounted in an acid-free frame, ‘tacked’ along its edges to the back of the mat with small strips of non-archival tape, and also carrying a shadow of the written text from the opposing page, the intact old portrait still displays a powerful image that would make an impelling focal point in an Indian art or artifact collection, or in simply decorating a room. The picture, from the fine collection of Dutch Grimm and her late husband Elmer, comes mounted as shown accompanied by a small display card and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity. | |||||||||
