McKENNEY AND HALL 1838 LITHO: QUA-TA-WA-PEA

Titled QUA-TA-WA-PEA, A SHAWANOE CHIEF, this early 19th century hand painted lithograph (DDG51) is from McKenney and Hall’s book INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA. Published by F. W. Greenbough in 1838, the approximately 12” x 18” lithograph is mounted in a mid-20th century, attractively decorated wood frame. The slightly frowning, rather stern image of the chief, dressed in clothing that would today be considered casual, comfortable, and arty, is portrayed wearing a large government style silver Peace Medal, the head on which appears to represent President Andrew Jackson. The litho, the edges of which are partially hidden behind a mat, appears to be intact but has obviously darkened with age and from not being mounted in an acid-free frame. As was another from the same collection, it may be ‘tacked’ along its edges to the back of the mat with small strips of non-archival tape. A shadow of the written text from the opposing page lightly stains much of the lithograph, but does not significantly reduce its colorful and mesmerizing impact. This would add a provocative and decorative point of study in almost any setting. From the wonderfully documented and lovingly assembled Native American collection of Dutch Grimm and her late husband Elmer, this very desirable picture comes with a small descriptive card and a certificate guaranteeing its authenticity.
