ANCIENT GOLD EARRINGS, INDO GREEK OR KUSHAN

This extraordinary matched pair of ancient gold earrings (WJF378) was found in the desert sands of northern Afghanistan in the area known as BMAC (Bactria Margiana Archeological Complex) sometime during the Russian occupation. Tentatively assigned to the Indo-Greek or Kushan period, c.300BC-500AD, they are in overall good condition with some expected denting, but little loss of their original full-bodied appearance. Measuring about 2” in length and inset with turquoise that appears to be original (although one small cab fell out and was epoxied back into its bezel), the last owner physically added gold studs so that the earrings could be worn today (easily removed without damage to the original gold work). Good example of early granulation, this unique ancient set comes with a small display card and copy from a recent newspaper article discussing the BMAC area.
