Illustrated in the photos associated with this page are twelve different whistles and ocarinas (AXH1265, EJW89, LLL513, LLL515, LLL517, LLL518, LLL524, LLL730R2N1, LLL755Q, LLL923, LLL928H and LLL928R) from the Heflin, Leutze and Langdon collections. The late Lynn Langdon found ten of the twelve in West Mexico in the mid-20th century. Dr. Allen Heflin found one in that area. This group of twelve, individually priced cameo pins, brooches, and rings (95.233HD; EJW224, 227 and 229; JI491, 547 and 621; MA10, MAJ1, MAJP15, PH2271 and WJF174) are mostly carved from shell. A special brooch was carved from opal and mounted on black onyx. This incredibly well preserved set of Pre-Columbian wood ear plugs (LFG442), on which the geometrically decorated shell and dark greenstone elements are each held in place with an almost invisible touch of contemporary glue, is attributed to the Moche horizon of Peru, c.100-800AD. Not wearable today due to the fragile nature of the wood that has dried and shrunk through the many centuries of entombment, there are certainly few other such pairs that have survived this well. The twelve Pre-Columbian copal lots illustrated in this group of twelve (LLL 734B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, N, O and P) were accumulated in West Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon.
