This 9 7/8" tall PROFESSOR B. E. MANN'S ORIENTAL STOMACH BITTERS bottle (193.86HJ), dating into the 1870s, was dug behind the old post hospital at the site of Fort Fred Steele, Wyoming (1868-1886) in the mid-20th century. With a beautiful, translucent, almost reddish amber, the embossed panels of this great example of the rare Mann's bitters have bowed in about 3/8" (occurred at the time of manufacture). This 4¾" long briar pipe (30.86BHJ) was found at the early Union Pacific Railroad site of Bridger Station, Wyoming. The stem of the well-preserved relic pipe is made from hard rubber or Bakelite. Bridger station started in 1868 and lasted until c.1885. Named after the famous mountain man, Jim Bridger, whose name lives on, nothing now remains of the old station except for a few mounds of dirt, some broken bottle glass, and a few rusted tin cans. Many of the bottles in this mixed group (88.314HD, 33.86HJ, 171.86HJ, 196.86HJ, 290.86HJ, 364.86HJ, LLL352, SXP213, SXP232, SXP233, SXP238, WL400) were dug at western forts (McPherson, Custer), ghost towns, and historic trail sites in Wyoming, Montana, and Nebraska, some of them identified, some not.
