This rather rare grooved stone object (LLL576) is known as a ‘bark beater’, and was used in Precolumbian west Mexico to pulverize and soften bark for clothing purposes. Measuring 2” square and 1 ¼” in thickness, the top and bottom of the volcaniclastic stone each has a different sized set of grooves. The large ¾ groove around the sides of the beater was used as a hafting site for a bent wood handle. This group of twelve carved stone figural amulets (LLL 1205F, H, K, M, O, Q, R, AI, AJ, AL, AP, and AR), all collected by the late Lynn Langdon in West Mexico during the mid-20th century, were strung in necklaces for protective wear. Classically shaped and finished with a moderately high polish, this slightly tapered stone ear spool (LLL814) was found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century. In excellent condition, and a fine example of the type, the spool measures 1 3/8” in height, and just over 1 1/8” across its top. Made from black basalt, and dated c.300B-600AD, the spool is attributed to the Nayarit horizon. All twelve of the stone and shell Pre-Columbian artifacts individually illustrated and priced in this group (TEH.F47.1-11 and TEH.F50.3) were taken out of a shadow-box frame assembled by the late Chester Howard, founder of the Colorado Mineral Society. Howard marked the frame with the word ‘Guerrero’. The 24 variscite (a hydrous aluminum phosphate mineral) beads and pendant that make up this stunning necklace (PBF205) are all attributed to the Tairona horizon of Colombia dating c.1000-1600AD. The mineral variscite, though looking much like green turquoise, was confirmed through the use of a refractometer that showed a spot refractive index of 1.58. This 3 ¾” long, ¾-grooved greenstone axe (LLL790) was found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon. Attributed to the Colima horizon, c.300BC-200AD, the axe is in overall very good condition with a few small usage chips and some pitting and abrasion on its moderately polished surface. The axe comes with a small display card, a brief write-up about Langdon, a map of Mexico on which is highlighted the Colima area, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
