All twelve of the stone and shell Pre-Columbian artifacts individually illustrated and priced in this group (TEH.F47.1-11 and TEH.F50.3) were taken out of a shadow-box frame assembled by the late Chester Howard, founder of the Colorado Mineral Society. Howard marked the frame with the word ‘Guerrero’. This stone animal head (LLL785), apparently fashioned to represent a tapir, was once at the back or poll end of a fine effigy axe. Broken across the shallow hafting groove that encircled the axe, the head has no other significant damage and by itself is a good example of the skilled Pre-Columbian stone-worker’s art. Measuring 2 ¾” in length, and 1 5/8” in height at the head, the axe is attributed to the Colima horizon of west Mexico dating c.300BC-200AD. Most of the twelve individually priced Pre-Columbian stone pendants shown in this group (TEH.F51.1, 6, 22, 27, 28, 34, 39, 44 & 46; and TEH166.D, L, N) are known as ‘penates’, named for the prayer-like pose. The 24 variscite (a hydrous aluminum phosphate mineral) beads and pendant that make up this stunning necklace (PBF205) are all attributed to the Tairona horizon of Colombia dating c.1000-1600AD. The mineral variscite, though looking much like green turquoise, was confirmed through the use of a refractometer that showed a spot refractive index of 1.58. This intact and undamaged example of a Pre-Columbian ear flare (LLL731R4N2A) was found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon. Attributed to the Nayarit group and dating c.300BC-200AD, the flare was made from relatively soft, pale greenish gray stone and is 1 ¾” wide and 1 1/8” tall. The surface of the stone is moderately stained and the once polished finish a little rough from exposure to weathering and ground waters.
