This fine burnished redware Pre-Columbian pipe (LLL1148) was found in West Mexico by the late Lynn Langdon in the mid-20th century. Measuring 6 Ύ” in length, and glued together in two places, with good restoration of the cracks, the pipe is a classic example of the Tarascan style dating c.1200-1500AD. This 9” tall burnished black-war stirrup vessel (AJC108) is attributed to the Chimu horizon of coastal Peru, c.1000-1400AD. In overall good condition but for a small, un-repaired probe hole on its side near the base and a lightly chipped and abraded rim, the vessel has four side panels encircling its body in each of which stands a helmeted warrior with right hand raised, and left grasping a long club that has one end resting on the ground. This relatively large, handled, open-based ceramic censer (LLL719), with its ribbed or plated body, appears to represent an armadillo. 9 Ό” in length, the censer is in overall very good condtition with no restoration and only the tip of its tail (located just behind the handle) missing. All of the beads and pendants in this group of twelve (LLL728, 754B, 841B, 842B & D, 857, 1133, 1135, 1137, 1206B, 1208A & B) were found in West Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon. Included in the group are beads and spindle whorls of various sizes, shapes, and decor made of stone, ceramic and shell. Condition ranges from fairly good to excellent. This group of twelve figurines and whistles (RDM 89, 92-95, 97, 98, 100, and 102-104) are all from the Barney Mallonee collection. Individually photographed and priced, most of the items appear to be from Ecuador. Included in the diverse grouping are owls, dog, parrots, jaguar, and a coatamundi. This 5” tall ceramic whistle (RFM57) is attributed to the Classic Maya dating c.300-900AD. In overall good condition with some damage to to the sides and an abraded beak, the image may represent a warrior or dancer wearing a bird’s head mask. The whistle emits a pleasing note when lightly blown and stands a little awry, easily tipping with fairly light touch. A glyph-like symbol can be seen in the oval panel just above its head. This 9 Ό” tall Pre-Columbian figural jar (LLL707) was found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century. From the estate of the late Lynn Langdon, the jar is intact with minor dings, though still coated with a fair amount of mud. An x-ray confirms the surface indications. The naked lady wears a beaded necklace, ear spools, a nose ornament, and has a group of nubbins on her left front arm probably representing decorative tattooing. The world-renowned Dr. Allen Heflin collection contained one of the largest assortments of Pre-Columbian ceramic pipes seen on the market in recent years. He found this one (AXH89) at the Aztec site of Cuautitlan, Mexico in July 1960 (so-marked on the bottom of the stem in black ink). 9” tall, this seated figure vessel (RFM41) is attributed to the Jalisco horizon of West Mexico dating c.100BC-250AD. With protruding tongue and hands to his head, this seated gent appears to be either getting over a long binge, or a good case of the flu!
