The five 24” prehistoric Native American shell bead necklaces in this group of five (JBB1 through JBB5) were hand selected and assembled from a hoard of shell disk beads found together on private lands in La Plata Canyon, New Mexico in the later 1900s. In excellent condition and fitted with hook and eye clasp, the beads on each strand range in diameter from about 4 to 6mm. Each of the twelve individually priced prehistoric Indian artifacts in this group (AXH231.2, 4, 6, 9, 11, 14, 19, 35, 47 & 52; AXH2755 and 2865) was found in various western and southern states (NV, NM, LA and AR) by the late Dr. Allen Heflin. This matched pair of brain-tanned beaded cuffs (TEH.F29.2) was removed from a decorative frame put together by the late Chester Howard. Dating from the 1880-1900 period, the beadwork, though somewhat stained from use, is in excellent condition. The gauntlets from which the cuffs were salvaged were undoubtedly worn out from use, and the gloves subsequently trimmed carefully from the cuffs. The late Chester Howard acquired this old Northern Plains elkhorn flesher (TEH104) in Montana in the 1950s. Measuring 13 ½” in length, and in excellent condition but for the missing metal wedge that actually scraped the hides, the handle end of this important tool is covered with sinew sewn hide that is still in good, though worn condition. This late 19th to early 20th century Northern Plains Indian pipe bag (TEH.F2.1) is from the late Chester Howard collection and measures about 22 ½” in length as shown in the first photograph on this page. Any quillwork that may have existed at the bottom of the bag has been trimmed. The beads (mostly glass with some faceted brass) are sinew sewn and the impressive and bold beadwork patterns in the lower half of the bag are in very good condition, although with some embedded grime.
