Each of the twelve individually priced prehistoric Indian artifacts in this group (AXH66.3, 6, 11, 14, 15, 20, 27, 28, 33, 35, 39, and 43), all found by the late Dr. Allen Heflin in Louisiana in the 1940s, was attached to a frame with Elmer’s glue. The late Chester Howard acquired this old Northern Plains elkhorn flesher (TEH104) in Montana in the 1950s. Measuring 13 ½” in length, and in excellent condition but for the missing metal wedge that actually scraped the hides, the handle end of this important tool is covered with sinew sewn hide that is still in good, though worn condition. Collector Walter Glowacki purchased this lot of 23 Columbian River points (WG101) at an Indian show in Denver in 1981. Measuring from ½” to a little over 1” in length, the stone types include black obsidian, mahogany obsidian, translucent chalcedony, jasper, agate, and opaque chalcedony of various other colors. Doesn’t the squared dumbbell-like design framed in black in the center of this bowl (GLC506) look like a scowling face? Identified as a Tularosa Black-on-White dating c.1100-1250AD, this type is sometimes thrown into the Anasazi Group, sometimes the Mogollon. Found north of Cuba, New Mexico in 1961, this 5” long prehistoric Indian bird jar (TEH63) is from the estate of the late Chester Howard, founder of the Colorado Mineral Society. Without restoration, the jar has minor spalling, a chipped left wing, is heavily fire clouded, and may be missing a piece along the mouth of the jar that represented a small ‘beak’. An impressive 11 ¾” in height and approximately 12 ½” in diameter, this long-necked olla (GLC507) is from the Gene Lang estate. Glued together with no significant restoration and the cracks untouched, the piece was typed by Lang as a Gila Plain dating c.300-1345AD from the Salado sub-group in Arizona. This is an inexpensive olla that would make a great decorator on a high shelf or nook and a great ‘type’ piece.
