$2800.00

Not for the sensitive, this erotic stirrup vessel (PES41) defies logical explanation. A description of what is shown is not difficult, but explaining its significance is beyond me. Rather than describe the images on the burnished 9 ¼” tall vessel, I’ll leave it to the reader to step through the photos and, if the message is clear to any reader, I’ll be grateful to add that interpretation to the write-up. Attributed to the Moche along the northern coast of Peru, whose art form is not unknown for ...click for details

$300.00

There is surprising detail on this 7/8” tall figural pendant (102.53HD) that was cast in copper and surfaced in Pre-Columbian days with a light silver coating. Attributed to the Chimu horizon of Peru, dating c.1000-1400AD, the amuletic character (a dancer or healer?), wearing a breechcloth, stands with legs slightly bent, and his remaining single arm flexed at the elbow with hand extended to the front (the left forearm is missing). A small ring at the top of his head appears to have been used fo ...click for details

This 2 5/8” tall, simply decorated, spread eagle pendant (TF97.148) is from the Veraguas horizon of Panama dating c.500-1200AD. Identified as a harpy eagle, and usually associated with shamanic transformation, this striking wearable pendant was lost wax cast with gold that tests out at about 14K. In overall very good condition, one of the wings has some incipient cracking caused by light bending of the crystallized gold. There does not appear to be any danger of breakage unless a heavy weight or ...click for details

Aside for the overall quality and frequent uniqueness of the artifacts and relics from the Dr. Allen Heflin collection, it’s difficult not to to rank its next most important feature as the extreme care practiced by Heflin in documenting the provenance of almost every one of his approximately 10,000 treasured items. Not all of them were large, or impressive, or complete, or of museum quality, and many were simply the fragments and parts from ritually broken offerings to ancient gods, or pieces re ...click for details
